Hello everyone! So, I know it has been a turbulent week for so many as the fight against police brutality and racism continues. Whilst I’m going to start posting my normal content again as it now feels right to do so, I still want to amplify Black voices and support the Black Lives Matter movement in every possible way. So today’s blog post is sharing some Black-owned sustainable fashion brands that will make your heart swoon!

Selva Negra // $$-$$$

Selva Negra is a Latina (I originally labelled them as a Black owned business to which I apologise and I’ve since corrected it) female-owned business that promotes ethical and sustainable practices whilst still retaining style. Unlike some sustainable and ethical brands, they don’t shy away from colour and love pattern! Whilst their sizing options are limited they are planning to expand them in the future and create more diverse sizing options.

House Of Aama // $$-$$$$

House Of Aama is known for its statement pieces and all the luxury it brings at prices that are more affordable than some other luxury brands. They’re not afraid of patterns or colour. Something refreshing to see among sustainable brands. House of Aama makes everything made to order to avoid waste which I think is brilliant! It is also deeply rooted in it’s African heritage, bringing something different to the often whitewashed world of sustainable and ethical fashion.

 

 

Earth Toned Collective // $$-$$$

ETC is a brand obsessed with colour, using natural dying processes and organic cotton! They even have a ‘Revive’ collection where they use deadstock and old textiles to create amazing garments. Whilst this means that they might not be sustainable fabrics it doesn’t matter because they are recycled! ETC creates colourful garments that truly make you smile.

Studio One Eighty Nine // $$$-$$$$

SOEN is a brand that uses its African roots to create traditional pieces with a twist. The use of traditional patterns and colours makes SOEN a unique slow fashion brand. Everything is hand made and they use traditional practices that create garmets that really connects to its roots. The making process of the garment is all done in Africa by people who have lots of experience. Though they are a little more expensive, their prices are totally worth it with the type of craftmanship you are getting!

Wasi Clothing // $-$$

Known for it’s hip, trendy garments Wasi definitely doesn’t disappoint. With prices starting in the high 30’s (in terms of garments) their prices are really affordable. Everything is handmade and made to order meaning you really are getting the best quality possible, something fast fashion cannot replicate.

 

 

So, that’s all for my quick rundown on some sustainable Black-owned fashion brands. I want to just point out that I know a lot of these are very expensive but that is the truth behind slow fashion. You’re getting what you pay for and in my personal opinion I think the prices are justified. If you’re looking for similar fast fashion pricing you won’t find it. However, the pricing of Wasi is very similar to Urban Outfitters so just keep that in mind. A lot goes into making clothes and slow fashion provides relief that someone is getting paid well for the clothes they’re being made to make.
